Gratitude

I stumbled on a quiet spot
where sand and water curved,
cupping a stone;
Where the sunlight, fading,
bathed it all in color,
Where quiet reigned -
Where beauty reigned -
Where, humbly, I stood
in  gratitude.

Desert of the Dunes

From the dusty mesa
Her looming shadow grows
Hidden in the branches of the poison creosote
She twines her spine up slowly
Towards the boiling sun
And when I touched her skin
My fingers ran with blood

When the last light warms the rocksAnd the rattlesnakes unfoldMountain cats will come to drag away your bones

When the last light warms the rocks
And the rattlesnakes unfold
Mountain cats will come to drag away your bones

Marsh Green

June 5, 2018 Marine Creek Park in Fort Worth, TX

Running on a trail around a small lake in Fort Worth, I saw a little dark green plant on the edge of a slime covered cement slab; slanted toward a marshy stream.  Of course, I knew my feet would get wet and covered in green ooze.  I would possibly be insect swarmed.   But it looked pretty there, alone and dripping with damp on a hot Texas morning.  So I went.

LIFE
Life teems
over wet concrete-
green and dripping,
lush, even in the Texas heat;
like you and I running:
vibrant, drenched, and
ready for anything.
